Homeless in land of plenty

At my part time security job at Walmart I witness the mass of humanity going about their business. Some of them live in the parking lot because they are homeless. Just like the feral cats and seagulls they are looking for some shade and something to eat. They are silent and invisible nomads in the land of plenty. They are mothers, daughters, sons and fathers. They are senior citizens for the most part. I help them when I can. I let them know they are seen and not forgotten. I listen to their stories. I try to give them hope. Many of us are very close to being in their shoes. Our incomes are the only barrier between us and homelessness. I have been there when I was in my 20’s in Houston Texas. I know the hopelessness and despair. Existing out in the elements with nowhere to go. Watching the world go by giving me the fleeting glances. Ignoring my plight. Hoping they never understand what it is like.
